Joey, Where do I begin? I am forever grateful that over 20 years ago, you and Howard opened your Kula home and hosted virtual strangers (me and Kendell, your 2nd and 3rd generation Boteilho cousins, from CA, who you’d never met before) so that we could attend a Boteilho Family Reunion on the land my grandparents called “home”. You graciously offered to be our tour guide as we drove around Maui searching out family and places that were part of our family history. Prior to that meeting, Maui used to be another “vacation spot” for me. All of my life, my mom had told us stories of a large group of Boteilho family members that remained on the islands when my Grandma Theresa came to the mainland in 1928. Having never been to the islands, Mom always “talked stories” (passed on to her through Grandma) of what life was like growing up in Hamakuapoko with her siblings. These stories were like “fairytales” to me, until YOU brought them to life! With you as our guide, I took pages of notes and hundreds of pictures of the fairytale places and the many family members that I got to meet! The love (and recipes) you have shared, the strong family ties that were reborn and all of the memories and stories we’ve shared in such a short time are priceless. I can’t believe I was just talking story and laughing with you on the phone earlier this week and now you’re heading home to Heaven. Isn’t that just like you to “pull a quick one” just to make us laugh? I miss you, my dear Cousin. I truly believe that you were the new “Boteilho Matriarch” for my generation. Thank you for showing us how to be strong, keep family close and never stop sharing family history.
You will never be forgotten…You’re probably already making malasadas for everyone in Heaven.
I love you, your cousin Debbie Souza
